Visual character

Transparent to translucent brown, gray-brown, or deep smoky tones, often with a glassy luster. The apparent depth can change with bead thickness, internal veils, and the direction of light.

From raw to bead

Rough smoky quartz may look darker where surfaces are irregular or opaque from abrasion. A rounded polish makes its vitreous surface more reflective and can reveal clearer brown-gray zones within the material.

Origin & geology

Smoky quartz is a brown to gray variety of crystalline quartz. Its color is associated with natural irradiation acting on trace elements in the crystal lattice; quartz forms widely in silica-rich igneous, hydrothermal, and metamorphic environments.
