Visual character

Moonstone can appear colorless, milky white, or softly gray, with a sheen that shifts as the stone moves under light. In Veil Loom’s Moonstone record, the material reads pale and translucent, with cool blue flashes that appear and recede rather than sitting evenly across the surface.

From raw to bead

In rough form, moonstone’s sheen can appear in broken, localized flashes across irregular faces. Polishing and rounded shaping give the surface a more continuous plane for light to travel across, making the moving glow easier to read as the bead turns.

Origin & geology

Moonstone is a gem name used for feldspar that shows adularescence—a floating sheen produced as light scatters through microscopic internal layers. Classic moonstone is associated with intergrown orthoclase and albite, although other feldspars can also show a moonstone-like effect. Veil Loom identifies this material at the feldspar-family level rather than assigning a more specific mineral species without laboratory verification.

Care & wear

Moonstone is about 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale and should be protected from hard knocks, high heat, and sudden temperature changes. Warm soapy water is recommended for cleaning the stone; ultrasonic and steam cleaners should be avoided. For a finished Veil Loom bracelet, follow the care needs of the complete composition rather than soaking the piece.

Curator note

Moonstone does not ask for attention. It holds light softly and wears beautifully in pieces that feel calm, personal, and understated.
