From raw to bead
Rough carnelian may look duller at broken or weathered surfaces. Polishing adds a smooth sheen and can make orange-red color and translucent areas read with greater depth.
Origin & geology
Carnelian is the orange to red variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz aggregate. It forms through silica deposition in geological settings such as cavities and veins, with iron contributing to its warm color.

Care & wear
